Tunable SIW-Based Evanescent-Mode Cavity-Backed Slot Antenna With Contactless Tuning

This paper presents a frequency reconfigurable evanescent-mode cavity-backed slot antenna (ECBSA) with wide tuning range, high-power handling capability, and simplified manufacturing. The mechanism consists of external long-range linear actuators contactless tuner disc to vary the capacitive loading an cavity. antenna’s operating is tuned by changing cavity’s critical gap size. Radiation occurs through annular aperture on ground plane. design realized printed circuit board (PCB) using substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) technology facilitate easier system integration other planar circuits. fabricated prototype shows 40% from 1.71-2.58 GHz when displaced vertically across distance 508 μm. Measurement results for peak gain ECBSA as high 5.48 dB at maximum 2.58 GHz. Due larger range sizes, achieved actuators, power capability higher than typically used piezoelectric disk tuners in design. proposed also exhibits largest among mechanically-tuned antennas presented literature.
